Why pay for your favorite celebrity autograph ?

So, why should you pay for your favorite star's autograph ? Some people like to argue the fact that the celebrity works long, hard, exhausting hours. That they just do so much in one day that we should not be so selfish to just expect them to be happy to sign a photo. I mean, after all, when we run into them on the street they are in a hurry to get to the latest hot-spot eatery. They are on the way to that new Beverly Hills salon that has promised them the hottest newest style that fans will love around the world. Maybe they are off to pick up the latest fashion must-haves at Kitson. So, you're right. Why should I , or anyone expect a star to stop to accept a kind word from a fan ? Sign that quick sloppy signature on a photo.

Yes, how incredibly selfish of me to want my idol to sign a photo when they have more important places to be. After all, I helped get them to those places. No, I am not their chauffeur. Although I might as well be. Didn't I run to the theater and spend $12 to see their new movie ? I had to get home to see them on the newest episode of Ellen too. Oh, and that new show they are guest starring in tonight at 8pm. Wow, then there was this great commercial for this new make-up they advertised during the show. I have to have that. While at the theater there were some more ads for products I think I have to pick up. In fact, they even showed previews to the next new movie, and that actor has a role in that too. Another $12.
Or, was that $1200 ? I forgot how much that new make-up will cost me. Oh, and then there were these fabulous new jeans and t-shirts that my favorite actor now endorses or sells, or something. I must have those. After all, I want to be as fabulous as they are.

Well, would you look at that. My favorite actor is now crossing the globe to all those other unfortunate countries. They are even going to adopt a few kids. Oh, look at how precious they are. All skin and bones, and skeletal-like. They must not have a movie theater in that country. Yes, I said THAT country. I mean, after all, why should anyone focus on the United States ? We are just the greatest nation in the world. There could not possibly be any deserving kids here right ? Doesn't charity begin at home ? Or was that just another quote from a famous celebrity ?
Yes, folks, I should run right out and support that celebrity charity. In fact, wouldn't it be great if they just charged me $25 to have their autograph instead ? Yes, that would be fantastic. They could charge me $25 and then say it's for their charity. Well, I guess I am out of luck on that signature because my charity of choice is the local Aids organization, or Breast Cancer. But that's right folks, my favorite celebrity will only give me their signature if I support their charity. After all, who really gives a shit that I spent all that money on their films, memorabilia, and endorsements. They still want more. What happened to the glory days when a star was all too happy they had a fan ? Wasn't it because of you and I that they ARE able to do the things they do ?

Now, some stars are not involved in charity at all. In fact, some were on a hit show from 1962 through 1967. Now, they go to autograph shows where I can also buy their signature for a nominal fee. Wow, I was born in between those years and I only got to see that show in syndication. But, that celebrity was apparently too stupid to think about a career beyond that hit show. So now, they can live off of selling their signature the rest of their lives. And here we are buying it. Who after all would pay for their retirement ? or insurance ? or that house on the beach in Malibu ?

Yes, I think we should continue to support the star of 1965 by just giving him money for his autograph. At least they won't go hungry. It's a good thing too, because for a minute there I thought there might be some real hungry, homeless people out there who might need our help. Oh, but wait, we are always afraid to take care of them. After all, they are all just drug abusers, and drunks anyway, right ?

And then the sports star. I have heard people defend them. That it took such hard, dedicated training and work to get where they are. While that may be true for some, the majority of them still want $30 to sign a baseball card. So, some people think we are not forced to go to a game. That is true. Now, to those same people I ask this: Would there be sports without the fan ? If not one person went to a game all season, or watched the televised game, would they still be able to pay the sports star $15 million per year ? The chances are incredibly great that the answer is no. The sport depends on those fans. To pay the ticket price and parking, to buy the merchandise and food. Remember, they have a $15 million dollar-a-year salary to pay. An not just to one star. They happen to have four of them just on that one team. Wow. That is sixty million dollars they have to make up. Don't forget the star themselves who have attorneys and agents, and managers. They get a cut too. So after $15 million a year, they only come home with about $4 million. What a shame. How could anyone live off of that.

How much do you make a year again ? And how much did you spend on the games and merchandise this year ? And how much did that hot second baseman want to sign a baseball card for your 9 year-old son ? Oh, I see, $30. When little Billy turns 18, let him know he can skip college and just become a star, after all, you have no money left for college.

The bottom line is that when someone chooses to become an actor or sports star or any other celebrity, stopping for a moment to sign autographs and receive fan mail comes with the territory. It is something that has gone on since the almost the start of show business. Boo-hoo to those poor stars that had or have nothing because they only rely on that signature money. Well, I guess you should have gotten a job like the rest of us. Of course, there are plenty of people out there to protect you and tell you it's only fair we pay you more money. Some people are not happy enough until they have given you everything. How would those same people feel if Paris Hilton wanted $30 every time she signed her name ? Oh, yes, I know, you would pay it, after all, she is just a poor misunderstood celebrity.
